Between Looking and Listening began at the Dobunni Poetry Festival, where over twenty poets were invited to choose a place, pause, pay attention, and respond to a simple question:
What did you notice?
Participants selected where they wished to be photographed before responding to a series of prompts. Their observations were recorded on paper and later returned to the landscape, photographed in or near the place where they first emerged. Combining portraiture, text and landscape, the project explores how different people encounter, interpret and experience the same environment.
Created in collaboration with poets, the series examines the relationship between attention, perception and place. Each contribution offers a unique perspective, while collectively forming an archive of noticing; a record of individual acts of attention that reveal both shared experience and personal interpretation.
The portraits, written observations and landscape photographs function as both document and indexical trace, marking a particular moment between person and place. Together, they form a layered record of presence, perception and memory, revealing the many ways people attend to and make meaning from the world around them.
